How to Choose a Leather Belt: The Complete Buyer’s Guide

A belt is one of the most-worn accessories you own, yet most people buy whatever is on the rack without thinking twice. The result: a belt that cracks within a year, stretches out of shape, or fades unevenly. This guide covers everything you need to know to buy a leather belt that lasts — the right leather grade, the right size, the right buckle, and what to look for in construction.

The Four Grades of Leather (And Why It Matters)

Full-Grain Leather — The outer layer of the hide, untouched. Strongest, most breathable, develops a patina over time. This is what quality belts are made from.

Top-Grain Leather — Sanded to remove imperfections. Looks more uniform, but loses durability. Mid-tier.

Genuine Leather — Lower layers pressed together with adhesive. Cracks and peels within 1-3 years.

Bonded Leather — Leather scraps ground up and glued onto fabric. The lowest grade.

If you want a belt that lasts 10+ years, buy full-grain. Every Fair Impex belt is full-grain buffalo leather.

How to Find Your Belt Size

The simple rule: Order 2 inches above your pant size.

  • Pant size 32 → Belt size 34
  • Pant size 34 → Belt size 36
  • Pant size 36 → Belt size 38
  • Pant size 38 → Belt size 40
  • Pant size 40 → Belt size 42

If between sizes, size up. A belt with seven holes gives flexibility — the middle hole is your everyday position, giving you three holes of adjustment in each direction.

Measuring Your Existing Belt

Measure from the buckle pin (not the end of the hardware) to the hole you use most. That measurement in inches is your belt size.

Choosing a Buckle Finish

  • Chrome / gunmetal — cool, modern, pairs with silver jewelry
  • Antique gold — warm, vintage, pairs beautifully with earth-tone leather

What Makes a Well-Built Belt

Look for: burnished rounded edges, triple-screw keeper, solid buckle bar, seven evenly spaced holes with the middle hole as your everyday position.
Avoid: glued edges, single-stitch keepers, loose or wobbly buckle bars, bonded leather, split grain.

How to Care for a Leather Belt

  1. Keep it dry — wipe off water immediately
  2. Condition every 6-12 months — beeswax or natural leather conditioner
  3. Store flat or loosely rolled — never folded
  4. Rotate it — don’t wear the same belt every single day
  5. Let it air out after heavy wear
